How to calculate your GPA

Your GPA is a credit-weighted average of your grade points:

  1. Convert each letter grade to grade points (A = 4.0, B+ = 3.3, …).
  2. Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours.
  3. Add those products, then divide by the total credit hours.

Frequently asked questions

How is GPA calculated?

Multiply each course's grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, and so on) by its credit hours, add those up, then divide by the total credits. This tool does it automatically.

What's the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

Unweighted GPA uses a flat 4.0 scale. Weighted GPA gives extra points for harder classes (AP, honors, IB), often on a 5.0 scale. This calculator uses credit-weighted grade points on a 4.0 scale.

Does my school use a different scale?

Some schools award 4.3 for an A+, and some use whole-letter grades only. Pick the matching scale above, or use our per-university pages for your school's exact scale.

Is a 3.5 GPA good?

A 3.5 GPA is generally considered good — roughly a B+/A− average — and is competitive for many colleges and scholarships, though requirements vary by program.
