UK degree classifications
| Classification | Weighted average |
|---|---|
| First-Class Honours (1st) | 70% and above |
| Upper Second-Class (2:1) | 60–69% |
| Lower Second-Class (2:2) | 50–59% |
| Third-Class (3rd) | 40–49% |
How it's calculated
Your classification is a credit-weighted average — a 40-credit module counts twice as much as a 20-credit one. Note that many universities weight your final years more heavily (e.g. Year 2 : Year 3 at 40:60); check your course handbook for your exact weighting.
Frequently asked questions
What are the UK degree classification boundaries?
First-Class (1st) is 70%+, Upper Second (2:1) is 60–69%, Lower Second (2:2) is 50–59%, and Third (3rd) is 40–49%. Below 40% is a fail.
How is a degree classification calculated?
It's the credit-weighted average of your module marks: multiply each module's mark by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. Many universities weight later years more heavily — check your course handbook.
What do I need for a 2:1?
A weighted average of 60% or above. This calculator shows exactly how many percentage points you are from the next classification up.
Does every UK university use the same boundaries?
The 70/60/50/40 boundaries are standard, but year weighting and borderline/rounding rules vary by university. Always confirm with your department's regulations.
